Why Your Life’s Mission is Made, Not Found

Have you ever been awed by someone’s unflinching commitment to a cause?

Gotten goosebumps from a poignant mission statement?

A person who has found and followed their true mission is a brilliant sight to behold – they move mountains, they make magic, they motivate even when the going gets tough. They are changed to the very core by their mission. It rewires, reignites, and realigns priorities.

But what does it look like for those wandering souls on the other end of the spectrum – vaguely bored with life as it is, searching for that “thing” or waiting for lightning to strike? What if you had a good thing going and then changed your mind? 90% of people come to coaching for this exact reason – even if they’re already leading happy, successful, well managed lives. I’ll illustrate further.

I was sitting with a client recently, getting down to the nitty gritty. He’s the very picture of success – happily married, wonderful children, successful career and stellar character. And yet, here he is sitting with a life coach, trying to figure out why he feels like something is wrong. He feels empty. As we were ticking off his accomplishments, it occurred to me that his life thus far looked like an ambitious bucket list – where everything he wanted had been crossed out and completed … two years ago! He accomplished everything he set out to do. And he’s been in a “Now what?” for a couple of years, which is equivalent to anyone who is not pursuing a vision in their life. SO what used to feel like an extraordinary life, now had a feeling of emptiness he couldn’t put his finger on.

The Difference Between a Goal and a Mission

What is that difference? A goal is something you acquire. A mission is something unending, a commitment, a purpose you continually fulfill. A mission that you’re truly connected to has the ability to fuel your life from beginning to end. You become a missionary for your cause.

Does that sound like a tall order? I don’t mean go join the Peace Corps or move to an ashram. You don’t have to wait for your “true calling” to become a missionary in your own life. You can learn it, and we teach it!

Missions are Made, Not Found

People who aren’t deeply connected to a big dream perceive those who are as “lucky” or “fortunate” to have found their calling, but luck has nothing to do with it. It’s a common misconception that people are wired for success or passion. You can be on a mission in every area of your life, and your missions can have different stages of maturity as you develop and design them. Putting time, intention, and care into this resource will help you design a life that makes you incredibly proud.

Interested in learning more? Want to know how to tap into that source? I’ll be covering the basics tomorrow on a live chat – register today for Living Your Mission Tele-Talk. Then, later this month, we’ll be gathering our community for a free Living Your Mission live workshop in NYC. If you’re not yet clear on your mission, or even if you’re well on your way, come out and be with us! We’ll show you how to align your current goals with a long term vision that inspires and excites you, and how to use it as a natural resource to produce profound results in your life and the world around you.

Cheers to that!

Love, Lauren
